A Place of Heart......A Field Study of Leadership, Education and Instruction in Japan

This two-week excursion into Japanese culture and its internationally recognized K-12 educational system provides a revealing look into an exemplary system of education. Japan is currently engaged in extensive educational reforms. In addition to maintaining high standards for academic excellence, Japan’s reform is focused on developing individuality and creativity, and cultivating emotionally well-rounded human beings.

Participants in this study tour will explore elementary, middle and high schools in both urban and rural locales, meet educational leaders from throughout the system, investigate leader and teacher preparation, and learn from university and Ministry of Education officials. Interspersed throughout the study tour will be opportunities to meet with Japanese  leaders, teachers, students and parents to learn first hand how the system works. The tour includes a visitation to a rural elementary school and an overnight stay in a remote hot springs guesthouse.
