Jonathan Brendefur is Director of the Institute for Developing Mathematical Thinking and Associate Professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies in the College of Education at Boise State University. Dr. Brendefur received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin—Madison where he was a curriculum and assessment writer for a reformed middle school project entitled Mathematics in Context; a research assistant examining high school students' understanding of functions and functional relationships; an external evaluator for a project examining the collaboration efforts, school-wide effects, and curricular/pedagogical success of teams of high-school teachers writing integrated curriculum. At Boise State he teaches mathematics methods, cognition and learning, and research perspectives. He has received over 8 grants in mathematics education and is currently the principal investigator on a three year Mathematics Science Partnership grant. He also sits on the board for the Idaho Council for Teachers of Mathematics. His areas of scholarly work lie in mathematics education, teacher beliefs, instructional practices, assessment, curriculum development, and mathematical discourse.
